Minimum Age to Rent a Car in Morocco: Renting in Marrakech at 21

The minimum age to rent a car in Marrakech with Getaround Rent Car is 21, with a full driving licence, and there is no young-driver surcharge. Many international brands rent from 21 or 23 with a daily fee below 25, and some categories are closed below 25 or 30. If you are 18 to 20, no agency in Morocco will rent you a car legally, whatever an advert says. Here is what applies by age, what to bring, and how to make a first road trip in Morocco go smoothly.

Age rules, in short

Your age With Getaround Rent Car Elsewhere, in general
18 to 20 Not possible Not possible
21 to 24 Yes, any of our 6 cars, no surcharge Often possible on small categories with a daily young-driver fee; automatic and SUV categories sometimes refused
25 and over Yes Yes
Seniors No upper age limit Some brands cap at 70 or 75; check

The licence must be a full licence, not a provisional or learner one. We do not require a minimum number of years since the licence was issued, but a driver who passed recently should be honest with themselves about a first drive in Marrakech traffic: start outside rush hours.

Second driver

The second driver is free with us and must also be 21 or older, with licence and ID shown at delivery. For a group of friends sharing the driving, name the two most experienced drivers.

What you pay at 21

Exactly the public price: €35 per day for a Dacia Sandero or Logan, €40 for a Renault Clio 5, Peugeot 208 or Opel Corsa, €45 for the automatic Dacia Duster, comprehensive insurance included with an excess of 8,000 MAD, 200 km per day, free delivery in Marrakech. The refundable deposit is €800 for every driver, whatever the age. See what a rental really costs in Marrakech for the comparison with counter prices, where the young-driver fee is one of the lines that inflates the “€9 a day” headline.

First road trip in Morocco: three pieces of advice

  1. Take the car in the morning, not at night after the flight, and drive out of the city before 8 am or after 10 am.
  2. Start with an easy road: Marrakech to Essaouira is flat, straight and has no toll. Save the Tizi n’Tichka for day two or three. See our Essaouira route and driving in Morocco guides.
  3. Do the check-out with care: photos of every panel, fuel gauge and odometer, and the written sheet signed by both sides. The deposit comes back in full when the car does.

Documents to bring

  • Full driving licence, physical card (UK, EU, US, Canadian and most others accepted; no international permit needed).
  • Passport or national ID card.
  • Payment card or cash for the rental and the €800 deposit.
