How the attendants work
In Gueliz, Hivernage and around the Medina walls, street parking is watched by attendants in blue coats, often with a badge. You pay a small amount when you leave for a short stop, and a fixed amount for the night. They are part of the system, not a scam: pay, take the ticket when there is one, and they will also help you out of a tight space. Prices are posted in the municipal car parks; on the street, ask the amount before leaving the car if you want to avoid any discussion.
- Arriving: the attendant waves you into a space and often stops traffic for you. A nod is enough; you pay when you leave.
- Leaving: the attendant helps you reverse out. Pay him then; have small change in dirhams.
- Overnight: tell him you are staying the night and agree the amount; he will note the car. Prefer a guarded car park for anything left inside.
- No attendant: free spaces exist in the Palmeraie and residential streets; the car is then under no one’s watch.

- Guarded car parks (Koutoubia, Bab Doukkala, Bab Agnaou, Arset El Bilk) are the choice for overnight and for anything left in the car. Open 24 hours, lit, with a guard.
- Street parking is fine for a few hours in daylight. Never leave luggage or bags visible, in Marrakech as anywhere.
- Riads often have an agreement with a nearby car park and send someone to meet you at the closest gate. Ask when you book the room; give them the car’s plate and colour.
Staying in a riad: where the car lives
A riad is inside the Medina, where cars do not go. Three habits make it simple:
- Ask the riad which gate it uses for guests and luggage: Bab Doukkala, Bab Nkob, the Koutoubia side, Bab Agnaou or Bab el-Khemis. That gate has a guarded car park, and the riad will often send someone with a cart.
- Take the car only for the days you leave the city. Inside the walls everything is on foot and taxis are cheap. Many of our customers book the car from day three or four and have it delivered at the gate that morning; see delivery at the Medina gates.
- Park overnight in the guarded car park at your gate, not on the street, and keep nothing visible in the car.

Arriving in Marrakech by car: the first ten minutes
- Before the ring road, set the navigation to a car park, not to the riad or the square: Koutoubia car park, Bab Doukkala, Arset El Bilk or your hotel in Gueliz.
- On the boulevards around the walls, stay in the right lane, slow down at every gate; scooters, carts and pedestrians cross without warning.
- At the car park, follow the guard’s hand signals, take the ticket, note the closing time if there is one, and photograph the car’s position if the park is large.
- Luggage: take everything out, or at least everything visible. A porter with a cart waits at most gates; agree the price before he loads.
- Walking to the riad: follow the directions the riad gave you, or let the riad’s helper guide you from the gate. Most walks are 2 to 10 minutes.
- The next days: leave the car where it is until you need it. Guarded car parks charge by the day; the attendants will keep an eye on it.
Driving in the Medina: mostly, don’t
A handful of roads enter the Medina (towards the Kasbah, Dar el Bacha, Riad Zitoun), and satellite navigation will happily send you down them. They end in dead ends and crowds. Park outside the walls, follow the walk indicated by your riad, and use a porter with a cart for luggage if the alley is long. If you must enter, do it before 9 am, at walking pace, and expect to reverse. Set your navigation to the car park, not to the riad’s address, and the problem disappears.
Two mistakes that cost money
- Parking on a yellow line or a taxi rank around Jemaa el-Fna and the station. The car is towed to the municipal pound and the fine plus the tow are deducted from your deposit. Use the car parks.
- Blocking a gate (Bab Doukkala, Bab Agnaou) even for two minutes. Same result.

At the airport and the station
Marrakech Menara Airport has a paid car park in front of the terminals, useful for a short stop.
