Where to Park a Rental Car in Marrakech: Medina, Gueliz, Hivernage

Parking a rental car in Marrakech is easy once you know the three systems: guarded car parks around the Medina walls, street parking managed by attendants in blue coats in Gueliz and Hivernage, and hotel or riad arrangements. The Medina itself is closed to cars except for a few access roads, so you always park outside the walls and walk in. Here is where to park by district, what it costs in practice, and how to avoid the two mistakes that cost visitors money.

Parking by district

Where you are going Where to park Walk
Jemaa el-Fna, souks, Koutoubia Guarded car parks at Place Foucauld / Koutoubia and behind the Koutoubia gardens; underground car park at Arset El Bilk (avenue Mohammed V) 2 to 5 minutes
Riads in the north of the Medina (Bab Doukkala, Dar el Bacha, Mouassine) Bab Doukkala car park by the bus station side, or the parking areas along the walls at Bab Doukkala and Bab Nkob 5 to 10 minutes
Riads in the south (Kasbah, Mellah, Bahia Palace) Car parks at Bab Agnaou / Place des Ferblantiers and by the Bahia Palace 3 to 8 minutes
Gueliz (avenue Mohammed V, Carré Eden, restaurants) Street parking with attendants; Carré Eden and Menara Mall underground car parks On the spot
Hivernage (hotels, Sofitel, Es Saadi) Hotel car parks; street parking with attendants along avenue Echouhada On the spot
Majorelle garden, YSL museum Guarded street parking on rue Yves Saint Laurent and side streets, attendants present 2 minutes
Palmeraie Hotels and villas have their own parking; free street parking is common On the spot

How the attendants work

In Gueliz, Hivernage and around the Medina walls, street parking is watched by attendants in blue coats, often with a badge. You pay a small amount when you leave for a short stop, and a fixed amount for the night. They are part of the system, not a scam: pay, take the ticket when there is one, and they will also help you out of a tight space. Prices are posted in the municipal car parks; on the street, ask the amount before leaving the car if you want to avoid any discussion.

Guarded car parks vs street

  • Guarded car parks (Koutoubia, Bab Doukkala, Bab Agnaou, Arset El Bilk) are the choice for overnight and for anything left in the car. Open 24 hours, lit, with a guard.
  • Street parking is fine for a few hours in daylight. Never leave luggage or bags visible, in Marrakech as anywhere.
  • Riads often have an agreement with a nearby car park and send someone to meet you at the closest gate. Ask when you book the room; give them the car’s plate and colour.

Driving in the Medina: mostly, don’t

A handful of roads enter the Medina (towards the Kasbah, Dar el Bacha, Riad Zitoun), and satellite navigation will happily send you down them. They end in dead ends and crowds. Park outside the walls, follow the walk indicated by your riad, and use a porter with a cart for luggage if the alley is long. If you must enter, do it before 9 am, at walking pace, and expect to reverse.

Two mistakes that cost money

  1. Parking on a yellow line or a taxi rank around Jemaa el-Fna and the station. The car is towed to the municipal pound and the fine plus the tow are deducted from your deposit. Use the car parks.
  2. Blocking a gate (Bab Doukkala, Bab Agnaou) even for two minutes. Same result.

At the airport and the station

Marrakech Menara Airport has a paid car park in front of the terminals, useful for a short stop. You will not need it with us: we deliver and collect the car at the terminal for free, at any hour. Marrakech train station (Gare de Marrakech) has an underground car park and street parking on avenue Hassan II; the drop-off lane in front is for a few minutes only.
