Yes, renting a car and driving in Morocco is safe for a visitor who drives calmly and knows a few local rules. Roads between the main cities are good, motorways link Marrakech to Casablanca, Rabat, Tangier and Agadir, and fuel stations are everywhere on the main axes. What surprises first-time visitors is not danger but density: scooters, pedestrians, carts and taxis share the road in town, and police checkpoints are frequent outside. Here is what to expect, and what we tell our own customers when we hand over the keys in Marrakech.
The short answer, by situation

The rules that differ from home
- You drive on the right, overtake on the left, as in continental Europe and North America. UK and Irish drivers adapt within an hour.
- Speed limits: 60 km/h in towns, 100 km/h on main roads, 120 km/h on motorways, unless a sign says less. Fixed and mobile radars are common on the airport road, on the way out of Marrakech and on the A7.
- Roundabouts: where no sign says otherwise, vehicles entering from the right may have priority. Locals often yield anyway. The safe rule is to slow down and make eye contact.
- Seat belts are mandatory front and back. Phone in hand while driving is fined.
- Alcohol: do not drink and drive at all. Checks exist and penalties are heavy.
- Documents: keep your driving licence, passport or ID, and the rental contract in the car. A licence from the EU, UK, USA, Canada and most countries is accepted for visitors; no international permit is needed.
Police checkpoints: normal, not a problem
You will meet gendarmerie or police checkpoints at the entrance of most towns and on main roads. Slow down, stop if the officer raises a hand, greet him, show the licence and the contract when asked. Most stops last under a minute. If you are fined for a real offence, usually speeding, the fine is paid on the spot against an official receipt. Ask for the receipt; keep it for the rental return.
What causes accidents for tourists
- Scooters that overtake on the right and appear from side streets. Check the right mirror before every turn.
- Sudden stops of taxis and buses. Keep more distance than at home.
- Speed bumps at the entrance of villages, sometimes unmarked. Slow down whenever houses appear.
- Overtaking on national roads behind a slow truck. Wait for a straight section; the truck will often signal when the road is clear, but check yourself.
- Fatigue on the Casablanca or Agadir motorway after a night flight. Take the car the next morning, or stop at a rest area.
Parking and the Medina
Most of the Medina is closed to cars. Park in one of the guarded car parks around the ramparts (Jemaa el-Fna, Bab Doukkala, Koutoubia) and walk. In Gueliz and Hivernage, street parking is managed by attendants in blue coats: a few dirhams for a stop, a fixed amount for the night. Never leave valuables visible in the car, as anywhere else.

- Breakdown: call us first, assistance is available 24/7 and included in every rental.
- Minor accident with another vehicle: fill in a joint accident report (constat) with the other driver, take photos, call us. For any injury or dispute, call the police (19 in towns) or the gendarmerie (177 outside towns).

Yes. Women drive everywhere in Morocco. The usual precautions apply: arrive before dark in unfamiliar places, park in guarded car parks, keep your phone charged.
Can I drive in Morocco with my UK or US licence?
Yes, for a tourist stay. No international driving permit is required. Bring the physical licence, not a photo.
Are the roads to the desert safe?
The roads to Ouarzazate, Zagora and Merzouga are paved and in good condition. The Tizi n’Tichka pass is the only demanding section: take it in daylight, in low gear downhill.
Do I need a 4×4?
No for the coast, the Atlas passes and the desert towns, which are all reached on tarmac. A higher car like the Dacia Duster is more comfortable on tracks to Agafay camps or mountain villages.
What happens if I get a speeding fine?
You pay it on the spot against a receipt. Fines received later through the plate are deducted from the deposit, with the notice as proof.
