In short: Marrakech to Essaouira by car is about 190 km and takes 2h30 to 3 hours on the N8 to Chichaoua and the R207 to the coast, with no motorway and no toll. The road is a well-kept single carriageway, flat for 165 km, with a 100 km/h limit, speed bumps in every village and frequent radars on the Chichaoua section. Fuel is available in Marrakech, Chichaoua, Ounagha and Essaouira. The medina is pedestrian, so you park in a guarded car park at Bab Doukkala, by the port or along Avenue Mohammed V. A day trip is 380 km, which fits the 200 km per day allowance over a multi-day rental. Any of our six cars does this road; a Dacia Sandero or Logan costs €35 per day with comprehensive insurance and free delivery in Marrakech. If Essaouira ends your trip, we collect the car there for €120.
Marrakech to Essaouira by car is about 190 km and takes 2h30 to 3 hours on the N8 road, with no motorway and no toll. The road is good, mostly flat, one lane each way, and passes through argan country where the famous tree-climbing goats stand by the roadside. With a rental car from Marrakech you leave when you want, stop at the argan cooperatives and reach Essaouira for lunch. This guide gives the route kilometre by kilometre, the timing that works, how to drive this road without a fine, where to park in Essaouira, the stops worth making, what the trip costs with one of our cars, and what a one-way return costs if the coast is the end of your journey.

The road, kilometre by kilometre
There is one sensible road from Marrakech to Essaouira and everyone uses it: the N8 west to Chichaoua, then the R207 through the argan hills down to the ocean. Satellite navigation gives the same answer. The table below is what you see out of the window, so that you know where you are without looking at the phone.
| Km from Marrakech | Where you are | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 20 | Marrakech ring road and exit towards Essaouira / Chichaoua | Dual carriageway, roundabouts, 60 km/h limit until the last houses, scooters and petits taxis cutting in |
| 20 to 75 | N8 across the Haouz plain | Flat and straight, 100 km/h, farmland both sides, radars common, villages with speed bumps |
| 75 | Chichaoua | Fuel stations and cafés on the main road; the R207 branches off here towards Essaouira |
| 75 to 165 | R207 through argan country | Gentle hills, bends, argan forest, goats in the trees next to oil stalls, women’s cooperatives |
| 165 | Ounagha | Last fuel before the coast; the Val d’Argan vineyard is nearby |
| 165 to 190 | Descent to Essaouira | The wind picks up, the ocean appears, then the white walls of the medina on the left |
Step by step
- Leaving Marrakech: from Gueliz or the airport, join the ring road and follow signs for Essaouira / Chichaoua. The first 20 km are dual carriageway with roundabouts; keep to 60 km/h until the last houses.
- Marrakech to Chichaoua (75 km): flat, straight, 100 km/h limit, farmland on both sides. Radars are common on this section. Chichaoua has fuel stations and cafés on the main road.
- Chichaoua to Ounagha (90 km): the landscape changes to argan forest. This is where you see goats in the trees, usually next to a stall selling argan oil; a small tip is expected for photos. The women’s cooperatives of the area sell oil, amlou and cosmetics at fair prices.
- Ounagha to Essaouira (25 km): the road descends towards the ocean, the wind picks up, and the white walls of the medina appear on the left.
Timing that works
The two things that stretch this drive are the Marrakech ring road between 8 and 9:30 in the morning and the return after dark. Everything else is predictable. Here are the three timings we see most often with our customers.
| Plan | Leave Marrakech | Arrive Essaouira | Leave Essaouira | Back in Marrakech |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Day trip | 8:00 | 10:30 | 17:00 | 19:30, before dark in winter, just at dusk in summer |
| One night | 10:00, after breakfast | 13:00 for lunch at the port | Next day 16:00 | 18:30 |
| Straight from the airport | Within 30 minutes of landing, car delivered at arrivals | Landing time plus 3h30 | Your choice | Your choice |
If you land at Menara in the afternoon and want to sleep in Essaouira the same evening, count 3h30 from the moment you walk out of arrivals: the car is waiting with our agent, the paperwork takes ten minutes, and you still want to reach the coast with daylight. A landing after 17:00 in winter means driving the last hour at night; we would rather you sleep in Marrakech and leave the next morning.
Driving the N8 and R207 without a fine
Speed limits
Morocco applies 60 km/h in built-up areas and 100 km/h on open national roads. On the Essaouira road the limit drops to 60 at the first house of every village, often before you notice the sign, and the speed bump follows a few hundred metres later. The radars and police checkpoints guide explains how controls work; on this route, fixed radars and mobile units are most frequent on the straight section between Marrakech and Chichaoua, exactly where a flat road invites you to go faster.
Overtaking
The road is one lane each way for 170 km. You will meet trucks, grands taxis and donkey carts. Overtake only on straight sections with a clear view, never in the argan hills where the bends hide oncoming traffic. Ten minutes behind a truck cost nothing; an overtake in a bend can cost the insurance excess and the holiday. Our guide to driving safely in Morocco covers the rest.
Wind, mist and night
Essaouira is a windy town, and the last 25 km can be gusty for a light car; hold the wheel firmly and keep both hands on it when a truck passes. In winter, mist can sit on the plain early in the morning, which is one more reason to leave at 8 rather than 7. We advise against driving this road after dark: unlit cyclists, carts and animals on the verge are hard to see, and the gain of an extra hour in Essaouira is not worth it.
Documents in the car
Keep your driving licence, passport, the rental contract and the insurance certificate we give you at delivery in the glove box. Checkpoints at the exit of Marrakech and the entrance of Essaouira are routine and polite; a foreign driver with papers in order is waved through in a minute.
Fuel and the 200 km allowance
Fill up before leaving Marrakech, where stations are everywhere, then you do not need to stop until Essaouira. Chichaoua and Ounagha have stations if you forgot. The fuel in Morocco guide explains the pump routine; all our cars run on diesel or petrol as marked inside the fuel flap, and attendants fill the tank for you.
The round trip is about 380 km. Every rental with Getaround Rent Car includes 200 km per day, counted over the whole rental, with 2 MAD per kilometre beyond that at return. So a day to Essaouira uses the allowance of that day and most of the next, which is absorbed without cost over a rental of two days or more. If you rent for a single day only to go to Essaouira, tell us when booking so we agree the kilometres in advance rather than at the return.
Which car for Essaouira
The whole route is tarmac, so no car is excluded. The choice comes down to the number of people, the luggage, and whether you want an automatic gearbox. Prices below are our public rates, all-inclusive, with comprehensive insurance (8,000 MAD excess), 200 km per day, a free second driver and free delivery anywhere in Marrakech and at Menara Airport.
| Car | Price per day | Gearbox | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dacia Sandero | €35 | Manual | Two people, a weekend bag each, the cheapest way to the coast |
| Dacia Logan | €35 | Manual | Four adults with suitcases; the biggest boot in the fleet at this price |
| Renault Clio 5 | €40 | Manual | Couples and small families who want a quieter, better-equipped car for the motorway-like N8 |
| Peugeot 208 | €40 | Manual | Same use as the Clio, with a different cabin |
| Opel Corsa | €40 | Manual | Same category, often the newest car available |
| Dacia Duster | €45 | Automatic | Drivers who only drive automatic, families with surfboards on the rack, a higher seat for the view |
Surfers heading for Sidi Kaouki or Moulay Bouzerktoun ask us about boards: a 6-foot board goes inside a Logan with the rear seats folded; longer boards travel on roof bars, which you should mention when booking. See all six cars on the rent by model page, and the automatic car rental page if the gearbox is the deciding factor.
Parking in Essaouira
The medina is pedestrian. Park in one of the guarded car parks at Bab Doukkala or by the port (Place Moulay Hassan side), or along Avenue Mohammed V near the beach where attendants manage street parking. Expect a fixed fee for the day and a slightly higher one overnight. Riads in the medina will tell you the closest gate to their door; most are 5 to 10 minutes on foot from a car park.
| Car park | Best for | Walk to the medina |
|---|---|---|
| Bab Doukkala | Riads in the north of the medina, arriving from the Marrakech road | You are at the gate |
| Port, Place Moulay Hassan side | Lunch at the fish grills, the Skala du Port, the beach | 2 to 5 minutes |
| Avenue Mohammed V | Beach day, hotels on the seafront, overflow when the two above are full | 5 to 10 minutes |
Leave nothing visible in the car, take your documents with you, and photograph the car where you parked it; the attendant will remember you better than you remember the row. Our parking guide has the same advice for Marrakech, where the rules are identical.

Stops worth making
- Argan cooperatives between Chichaoua and Ounagha, to see the pressing and buy oil at source. Choose a cooperative with a sign and a workshop you can walk into, rather than a roadside stall; the oil is the same colour but not the same oil.
- Val d’Argan, a vineyard near Ounagha open for visits and lunch, 25 minutes before Essaouira. A good stop on the way back if the driver is not the one tasting.
- Sidi Kaouki, 25 km south of Essaouira, a long wild beach with camels and surf schools; 30 minutes by car from the medina. Tarmac all the way.
- Moulay Bouzerktoun, north of Essaouira, for windsurf and kitesurf; the wind that makes Essaouira cool makes this bay famous.
- Diabat, the village south of the river mouth, for the ruined pavilion in the dunes and a quiet lunch away from the medina crowds.
Essaouira itself needs no car once you are parked: the ramparts of the Skala de la Ville, the port with its blue boats, the fish grills on Place Moulay Hassan, the Mellah and the woodworkers under the ramparts are all within ten minutes of each other. The day trips from Marrakech guide puts Essaouira next to Ourika, Imlil, Agafay and Ouzoud if you are choosing between them.
Essaouira in one day, hour by hour
- 8:00: leave Marrakech with a full tank. The ring road is still fluid.
- 9:15: coffee in Chichaoua, or push on to an argan cooperative half an hour later.
- 10:30: park at Bab Doukkala or the port. Walk the ramparts first, while the light is on the ocean.
- 12:30: grilled fish at the port stalls or a restaurant on Place Moulay Hassan.
- 14:00: the beach, or drive 30 minutes to Sidi Kaouki for a wilder one.
- 16:30: tea on a terrace, then back to the car.
- 17:00: leave Essaouira. The sun is behind you on the way back.
- 19:30: Marrakech. In winter it is just dark; leave at 16:30 instead if you prefer to avoid any night driving.
Day trip or overnight?
A day trip works: leave at 8, arrive at 10:30, walk the ramparts, eat grilled fish at the port, drive back at 17:00 and reach Marrakech at 19:30, before dark. Two nights are better if you want the beach and Sidi Kaouki, and the town after the day visitors have left is a different place: cooler, quieter, the ramparts empty at sunset. Your rental car costs the same per day either way, and you keep it for the rest of your stay. For a stay of five days in Marrakech, two of them on the coast, the car costs €175 with the Sandero and you have used it for airport pick-up, the medina gates, Essaouira and the return.
Continuing beyond Essaouira
Essaouira is also a junction. From the medina you can continue in three directions without coming back through Marrakech:
| Onward route | Distance | Driving time | Road |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essaouira to Agadir | About 175 km | About 3 hours | N1 coast road via Tamanar, hills and ocean views, single carriageway |
| Essaouira to Safi and Oualidia | About 130 km to Safi | About 2 hours to Safi | R301 coast road north, quiet, oysters at Oualidia |
| Essaouira back to Marrakech Menara Airport | About 190 km | Allow 3h30 plus check-in | R207 and N8, the same road in reverse; the airport is on the Essaouira side of town |
The Agadir leg is popular with families flying out of Agadir Al Massira: the Marrakech to Agadir guide covers that road, and we collect cars in Agadir for the same €120 one-way fee as Essaouira. Flying home from Marrakech after a night on the coast is simple too: leave Essaouira four hours before the flight and you reach Menara with time to hand the car to our agent at departures.
Car, bus or organised tour?
Buses run between Marrakech and Essaouira several times a day and take about three hours, with the Essaouira station outside the medina walls. Organised day tours by minibus follow the same road with a fixed timetable and a stop at a cooperative chosen by the operator. The rental car wins from two people, and more clearly from three, because the price is per car and the day is yours.
| Rental car | Bus | Organised day tour | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price logic | Per car, from €35 per day for up to five people | Per seat | Per seat |
| Timetable | Yours | Fixed departures | Fixed, usually back in Marrakech early evening |
| Stops | Any cooperative, Sidi Kaouki, Val d’Argan, Diabat | None | One stop chosen by the operator |
| Door to door | Riad to riad, delivered to you in Marrakech | Station to station, taxis at both ends | Pick-up points in Marrakech |
| Rest of the stay | You keep the car for Ourika, Agafay, the airport | No | No |
One-way: drop the car in Essaouira
If Essaouira is the end of your trip, we collect the car there for €120 (the same fee applies for Agadir and Casablanca). Pick-up in Marrakech, at your riad or at Menara Airport, is free at any hour. Conditions on the rental conditions page. Tell us the address and the hour at booking; our agent meets you at the car park, checks the car with you against the photos taken at delivery, and the €800 deposit is released as described in the contract.
What the trip costs with us
We publish our prices and do not add fees at the counter, because there is no counter. Here is a two-day Essaouira trip for two people in a Sandero, with the lines you pay to us and the lines you pay on the road.
