By motorway: the standard choice
- Leave Marrakech by the ring road and follow signs for Agadir / A7. The junction is south-west of the city, close to the airport.
- The first 90 km run flat past Chichaoua. Take a ticket at the entry booth.
- The motorway then climbs into the Atlas foothills, with viaducts and a long tunnel. This is the section with the most radars and the most wind for a small car.
- After Argana the road descends towards the Souss plain; Agadir appears about 40 km later. Exit towards Agadir centre or Taghazout / Essaouira north for the surf coast.
By the old road: slower, prettier
The N8 to Chichaoua then the R209 via Imintanoute and Argana follows the old caravan route through argan forest and Berber villages. It takes about 4h30 and has no toll. Worth it once, in daylight, with a stop at an argan cooperative; take the motorway back.
Where to go from Agadir
- Taghazout and Tamraght, 20 km north: surf, cafés, sunset from the terraces.
- Paradise Valley, 50 km north-east: pools in the palm-lined gorge; the last kilometres are a narrow tarmac road.
- Taroudant, 80 km east: the small walled city called “little Marrakech”, an easy half-day.
- Legzira and Sidi Ifni, 160 km south: the arch beach and the Spanish-era town.
