Marrakech to Merzouga by car is about 560 km and 9 to 10 hours of driving, entirely on tarmac, over the Tizi n’Tichka pass, past Ouarzazate, the Dades and Todra gorges, Erfoud and Rissani. Nobody does it in one day: the classic plan is 3 days out and back (Marrakech, Dades, Merzouga, Ouarzazate, Marrakech), or 4 to 5 days with a night in the gorges and one at the dunes. Suggested itineraries

3 days, 2 nights (about 1,150 km)

Day 1: Marrakech, Tizi n’Tichka, Aït Benhaddou, Ouarzazate, Skoura, night in the Dades valley (about 320 km, 7 h with stops).
Day 2: Todra gorge in the morning, Erfoud, Rissani, arrival at Merzouga mid-afternoon, camel ride or 4×4 to the camp for sunset, night at the dunes (about 250 km, 4 h).
Day 3: sunrise on the dunes, then the long drive back to Marrakech (560 km, 10 h). Leave by 8 am; or stop in Ouarzazate for a fourth day.

4 to 5 days (recommended)

Same road, with a night in Ouarzazate or Aït Benhaddou on the way out, a night in the Dades or Todra gorges, one or two nights at Merzouga, and a night in Ouarzazate on the way back. The driving days drop to 3 to 5 hours each, which is what makes the trip pleasant.

Mileage and cost with our cars

Each rental day includes 200 km and extra kilometres cost 2 MAD each. A 3-day loop of 1,150 km exceeds the 600 km included; the 550 extra kilometres are charged at return. Over 5 days (1,000 km included) the same loop uses only 150 extra kilometres. If your Merzouga trip is part of a longer rental in Marrakech, the allowance of the other days covers it. What to know on this road

Fuel: fill up in Marrakech, Ouarzazate, Tinghir and Erfoud. There is nothing between Taddert and the south side of the pass. See fuel in Morocco.
Daylight: plan every leg to arrive before sunset. Roads are unlit and animals cross.
Checkpoints: at Ouarzazate, Tinghir, Erfoud and Rissani; licence and contract at hand. See speed limits and checkpoints.
Weather: snow can close the Tizi n’Tichka for a few hours in winter; summer heat at Merzouga exceeds 40 °C, drive early. Sandstorms are rare but possible in spring.
The dunes: rental cars stay on the tarmac. The camps collect you at your hotel or at the edge of the dunes by 4×4 or camel. Do not drive onto the sand.
Accommodation: book the desert camp and the gorge hotel in advance in high season; both are used to travellers arriving by rental car and have parking.

Return in Marrakech or elsewhere

Can I drive from Marrakech to Merzouga in one day?

It is 560 km and 10 hours over a mountain pass: possible in theory, not sensible. Plan at least one night on the way, in the Dades or Todra gorges.

Do I need a 4×4 to go to Merzouga?

No. The road is tarmac all the way to Merzouga village. The dunes are reached with the camp’s 4×4 or by camel.

How many kilometres is the Marrakech–Merzouga loop?

About 1,150 km out and back by the same road, or about 1,000 km if you return via Fes and drop the car there.

Is the road safe?
