Step by step
- Leaving Marrakech: from Gueliz or the airport, join the ring road and follow signs for Essaouira / Chichaoua. The first 20 km are dual carriageway with roundabouts; keep to 60 km/h until the last houses.
- Marrakech to Chichaoua (75 km): flat, straight, 100 km/h limit, farmland on both sides. Radars are common on this section. Chichaoua has fuel stations and cafés on the main road.
- Chichaoua to Ounagha (90 km): the landscape changes to argan forest. This is where you see goats in the trees, usually next to a stall selling argan oil; a small tip is expected for photos. The women’s cooperatives of the area sell oil, amlou and cosmetics at fair prices.
- Ounagha to Essaouira (25 km): the road descends towards the ocean, the wind picks up, and the white walls of the medina appear on the left.
Parking in Essaouira
The medina is pedestrian. Park in one of the guarded car parks at Bab Doukkala or by the port (Place Moulay Hassan side), or along Avenue Mohammed V near the beach where attendants manage street parking. Expect a fixed fee for the day and a slightly higher one overnight. Riads in the medina will tell you the closest gate to their door; most are 5 to 10 minutes on foot from a car park.
Stops worth making
- Argan cooperatives between Chichaoua and Ounagha, to see the pressing and buy oil at source.
- Sidi Kaouki, 25 km south of Essaouira, a long wild beach with camels and surf schools; 30 minutes by car from the medina.
- Moulay Bouzerktoun, north of Essaouira, for windsurf and kitesurf.
- Val d’Argan, a vineyard near Ounagha open for visits and lunch.
Day trip or overnight?
A day trip works: leave at 8, arrive at 10:30, walk the ramparts, eat grilled fish at the port, drive back at 17:00 and reach Marrakech at 19:30, before dark. Two nights are better if you want the beach and Sidi Kaouki. Your rental car costs the same per day either way, and you keep it for the rest of your stay.
